Where Grief and Spirit Meet
Grief as a Spiritual Practice: Invitations for Your Own Divine Connection
Grief changes everything…it changes how we see time, how we experience love, how we understand what is possible beyond this life. It can also open a spiritual doorway that invites new forms of connection and intuitive wisdom.
In my own path through the losses of my grandfather, father, and mother (beginning in 2018), I discovered that grief doesn’t just end a relationship as it reshapes how we relate to life itself.
Below are some invitations and reflections you can explore as you walk your own path of healing.
1. Presence Instead of Fixing
The instinct to “get over it” is strong, but grief isn’t a problem to solve. Try sitting with your breath, a candle, or even a single word like peace for a few quiet minutes each day. Notice what arises without judgment.
Why it matters: Stillness creates space for comfort, memories, and even spiritual messages to come forward naturally.
2. Listening Beneath the Noise
Many people describe subtle experiences during grief: meaningful dreams, sudden insights, or unmistakable signs. Whether you call it intuition, inner knowing, or communication with loved ones, this deeper listening can be a source of guidance.
Try this: Keep a bedside notebook for any dreams or sudden impressions. Patterns often reveal themselves over time.
HINT: the “notepad” feature in your cell phone is a great way to quickly capture your hits. Bonus points if you use the “talk to text” feature.
3. Ritual as a Healing Bridge
Simple acts such lighting a candle, writing a letter to someone who has passed, or creating a small altar can offer a tangible way to honor love that continues.
Why it matters: Rituals turn remembrance into communion, allowing connection with the unseen to feel steady and real.
My mom’s altar that was created over time. I love having little pieces of her essence around me so that I can visit with her in a focused way.
The container of dimes represent all the times my loved ones in Spirit made their presence known. There’s quite a few!
4. Welcoming Spiritual Gifts
For some, sustained grief gently awakens psychic or mediumship abilities. My own intuition sharpened over several years of loss, but the invitation is universal: to trust that love endures and to stay open to how that love might communicate.
Try this: Before sleep, set a gentle intention: I welcome messages of love and comfort for my highest good. See what unfolds over weeks, not hours.
5. Carrying Forward What Love Teaches
Grief often transforms into a lifelong practice of presence and service. Whether you feel called to help others, create art, or simply live with deeper compassion, these impulses are part of grief’s wisdom.
Reflection: What is grief teaching you about your own capacity to love, notice, or serve?
A Closing Invitation
Your grief is uniquely yours, but you are not alone in the spiritual openings it can bring. Whether through Reiki, intuitive listening, or quiet rituals, let each practice remind you that you are forever connected to the Divine.
-xoxo,
Heather
