Grounded in Humanity in the Age of Technology

We live in a remarkable time.

In just a few taps, we can connect with people across the globe, learn something new, or share a piece of our story. Technology has opened doors our ancestors couldn’t have imagined. And yet, with this gift comes a gentle caution: if we lean too heavily on digital connection, we risk losing touch with the most essential connection of all which is the one to our human selves and the people right in front of us.

I’ll be honest…..there are times I catch myself lost in the endless scroll. One post leads to another, and before I know it, twenty minutes, or an entire hour, has slipped by.

What was I really looking for? A laugh? A distraction? A sense of connection?

And yet, when I set the phone down, I notice something deeper: I was missing the world right in front of me. Maybe it was the way my dogs wanted to play, the sound of kids playing outside, or even the chance to have a meaningful conversation.

Endless scrolling gives me stimulation, but it doesn’t always give me nourishment. Presence requires us to look up, breathe in, and step into the life that is unfolding right now

The Beauty of Both

Technology is not the enemy. It allows us to maintain relationships across distance, to share grief and joy in real time, and to find communities that nourish our souls. But technology alone cannot replace the warmth of a hug from a loved one.

It’s not about choosing one over the other rather how do we weave them together?

Imagine sending a supportive message online, and then following up with a phone call. Or sharing a beautiful reflection in a post, but also making space for a face-to-face conversation with a friend who truly needs you.

One doesn’t diminish the other as they work best when they work together.

Returning to Our Human Side

There is a grounding that happens when we step away from the screen and into life as it unfolds around us. Walking barefoot in the grass or sitting across from another person and seeing the expression in their eyes…..these are reminders that we are more than usernames and avatars.

Connection is meant to be felt in our bodies, not just read through glowing screens. Our hearts need presence as much as our minds need information.

A Spiritual Layer of Connection

Beyond human-to-human contact, there’s another thread: our spiritual connection. When we pause and tune in whether through prayer, meditation, or Reiki, we realize that connection extends beyond physical and digital spaces. It’s in the unseen ways we feel guided, supported, and held.

Even loved ones who have passed remain near, reminding us that connection isn’t limited by time or technology. Spirit finds us in whispers, synchronicities, and moments of stillness. We just need to allow ourselves to unplug long enough to notice.

An Invitation

I invite you to reflect on where your connections live right now.

Are they mostly through screens?

Do you make space for the people right beside you?

Do you allow yourself to feel held by Spirit in moments of quiet?

Connection is a balance. Technology gives us reach, but humanity gives us depth. Both are valuable but it’s our responsibility to remember that the deepest connections are felt in presence, in authenticity, and in the tender places where our souls truly meet.

How will you show up for yourself, and others today?

-xoxo,

Heather
